The game of poker has a long history. The first contemporary mention is found in the 1836 book Dragoon Campaigns to the Rocky Mountains by J. Hildreth. The second, in reminiscences published by Joe Cowell two years later. Various etymologies are suggested for the name, but most scholars agree that the word is derived from a German verb meaning to bet.
The card game is played with a fixed number of chips representing money (the pot). Each player has the privilege or obligation to place bets in each betting interval according to the rules of the particular poker variant being played. The player who places the first bet is called the button.
A poker hand consists of 5 cards – your 2 personal cards in your hand plus the community cards on the table. The best poker hand is a royal flush. The next highest is a straight. A flush consists of 5 consecutive cards of the same suit. Three of a kind is 3 matching cards of the same rank. 2 pair is two cards of the same rank, and another two unmatched cards.
In poker, and in life, the goal is to maximise your winning hands while minimising your losing hands. This strategy is known as minmax. You do this by weighing the odds of each hand, taking moderate risk to maximise your wins and minimising losses when you have a bad hand. This is a difficult task to master and is not always possible, but you should aim for it as much as you can.
