Casino is one of Martin Scorsese’s longest movies yet it never lags or runs out of steam. His masterful editing and taut narration keep this movie a lean, mean thriller until the very end. While other movies may show the opulence, neon signs and people gambling at cards and slots, Casino digs deep and uncovers Vegas’ dark past of mob ties and organized crime.
Casino is the story of Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro) who funnels money out the back door of the fictional Tangiers hotel he all but runs for mob elders in the East. He does this to avoid being caught on gambling charges and he is helped along by feisty former hooker/call-girl Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone). Mob strong-arm Nicky Santoro comes out to Vegas to protect Rothstein and eventually ends up running his own rackets.
While the seedy backroom gambling parlor stereotype still exists there are many casinos that are a safe and enjoyable place for adults to spend some time. These lawful gambling pavilions usually employ security guards, monitor their parking lots and take precautions against violent crime that can afflict the surrounding neighborhood. They also have huge and beautiful gaming floors where people can play a wide range of games including slots, table games like blackjack, roulette and poker that require skill as well as luck.
Slot machines are designed with high ceilings and beautiful decor and they often have a playful design that can make players feel like they are in a fun playground. They offer fast pace, excitement and a chance to win large sums of money. However, these machines can be addictive if individuals have a gambling disorder and they can easily become trapped in a trance-like state while playing them and lose more than they win.
