Poker is an ancient card game with many different versions. Its origin is uncertain, but some historians believe it originated in Persia. Other researchers claim it developed alongside other games that were played with cards. A 17th century French game called poque, from which we get the word poker, evolved alongside a German game called pochspiel, which is similar to poker. The game was later spread to the New World by French settlers.<\/p>\n
Players start the game by being dealt two cards face-down. These cards are known as the player’s pocket or hole. The turn to deal and bet passes from player to player, beginning with the player to the left of the big blind. Then three cards are dealt face-up in the center of the table, referred to as the “flop.” Each player must use the flop to build their five-card hand.<\/p>\n
When the final betting phase comes, the players reveal their cards to determine the winner of the pot. If the player’s hand is better than anyone else’s, he or she is declared the winner. After each player has made a final decision, a new round begins with blinds and antes. In seven-card stud, the best hand is the best five-card combination.<\/p>\n
